UVA Center for Diabetes Technology, Tandem Diabetes Care Join Forces on Automated Insulin System Research

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (UVA Today) – The University of Virginia Center for Diabetes Technology and Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc., have entered into a long-term research partnership to drive innovation in fully automated insulin delivery systems.

The joint initiative will leverage the UVA Center for Diabetes Technology’s pioneering achievements in enhancing diabetes patient care through technological solutions, and its proven track record of converting sophisticated automated insulin delivery (AID) algorithms into widely-used medical devices, combined with Tandem’s proven capabilities in insulin delivery systems, algorithm deployment, and data analytics.

“Following a decade-long partnership with Tandem, we’re thrilled to embark on this new phase of collaboration to benefit diabetes patients,” stated Marc Breton, PhD, associate director for research at the UVA Center for Diabetes Technology. “Our combined efforts will strengthen research into automated insulin delivery, aiming to once again significantly improve patient care and life quality worldwide.”

The partnership will build upon Tandem’s existing research initiatives in advancing automated closed-loop insulin delivery technology, bringing together researchers, medical professionals, and technical specialists from both organizations. Findings from this collaboration could expedite clinical trials to expand approved applications for Tandem’s future AID systems.

“Our previous collaborations with UVA, including research on our automated insulin delivery systems through the International Diabetes Closed Loop trials, helped create transformative solutions for diabetes patients,” said John Sheridan, president and chief executive officer at Tandem. “We expect this research partnership to extend our shared legacy of developing innovative solutions that enhance the lives of individuals managing diabetes.”

Under the agreement terms, Tandem will provide the University of Virginia with research funding, technological resources, and necessary supplies to support diabetes-focused research and potential clinical investigations.
