Professor Devinder Mahajan Awarded SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund Grant

Devinder Mahajan, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering and leader of the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT) at Stony Brook University, has been selected for the Class of 2024 SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF).

This distinguished grant delivers essential funding to innovative faculty researchers and scientists within the SUNY network. In this cycle, SUNY allocated $425,000 through TAF to support seven innovative initiatives that could transform healthcare delivery, environmental conservation, and New York’s advanced electronics sector.

The grant acknowledges Mahajan’s innovative work in creating an integrated system that stores and dispenses blended hydrogen and methane at near-ambient temperature and pressure levels. This novel approach tackles key obstacles in efficient hydrogen storage and on-demand release, marking a crucial advancement toward sustainable energy solutions.

Managed by the SUNY Research Foundation, TAF connects laboratory discoveries with commercial applications. By supporting key development phases—including feasibility analysis, prototype development, and system testing—TAF helps validate the market potential of new technologies. This enhancement makes them more appealing to prospective investors.

Since its inception in 2011, the TAF initiative has fostered innovation throughout the SUNY system. SUNY has invested more than $3.5 million through TAF, advancing 72 innovative technologies toward commercialization. This investment has generated over $16 million in additional funding from diverse sources, including federal agencies, corporate partners, and venture investors.
